Kyle Connor etched his name in Winnipeg Jets history on Saturday night, notching his eighth 30-goal season, a new franchise record, as the Jets defeated the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche 3-1. The victory at Canada Life Centre was crucial for the Jets, who are battling for a playoff spot after suffering back-to-back losses.
Connor's milestone goal broke a tie with Ilya Kovalchuk for the most 30-goal seasons in the Thrashers/Jets history. He also contributed an assist in the game. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was solid in net, stopping 28 of 29 shots, while Alex Iafallo and Cole Perfetti, with an empty-netter, also scored for Winnipeg. Mark Scheifele contributed two assists, marking a new personal single-season record with 51 helpers.
The Jets' strong defensive effort held the high-scoring Avalanche, who average 3.80 goals per game, to just one goal. Martin Necas spoiled Hellebuyck's shutout bid late in the third period, but Mackenzie Blackwood made only 15 saves in the loss for Colorado. Avalanche defenseman Brent Burns marked his 990th consecutive NHL game, surpassing Keith Yandle for the second-longest "Iron Man" streak in league history.
With the win, the Jets (27-28-10) are hoping to gain momentum as they push for a playoff berth in the Western Conference. Connor, who has played 10 seasons for the Jets, continues to be a key player for the team.
