Macklin Celebrini, the San Jose Sharks standout, has scored Canada's first Olympic goal by an NHL player in nearly 12 years. The 19-year-old from North Vancouver, BC, found the back of the net against Team Czechia in the opening game of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. Celebrini tipped in a shot from Cale Makar with just seconds remaining in the first period, giving Canada a 1-0 lead.
The goal marked a significant moment for Canadian hockey, as it was the first time NHL players have participated in the Olympics since the 2014 Sochi Games. Celebrini became the youngest Canadian NHLer to score a goal at the Olympics, surpassing Jonathan Toews, who was 21 when he scored in the 2010 gold-medal game. Celebrini, drafted first overall in 2024, has quickly become one of the NHL's top young stars.
Canada dominated Czechia in the game, winning 5-0, with goalie Jordan Binnington earning a 26-save shutout. Mark Stone, Bo Horvat, Nathan MacKinnon, and Nick Suzuki also scored for Canada. Connor McDavid contributed three assists.
Celebrini's performance has drawn praise from teammates and coaches alike. Tom Wilson lauded Celebrini's skill and confidence, saying, "He's got that swagger". With high expectations and a talented roster including veterans like Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid, Canada is considered a favourite to win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
