Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield is making a strong push for the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL's top goal scorer. Caufield scored twice in the Canadiens' recent 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers, bringing his season total to 49 goals. He now trails Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon by a single goal for the league lead.
Caufield's impressive performance against the Rangers marked his seventh consecutive game with a goal and extended his point streak to three games. The 25-year-old has been on a tear, scoring 10 goals in his last 10 games. His 49 goals and 34 assists give him 83 points in 74 games this season. MacKinnon, in comparison, has 50 goals, 71 assists, and 121 points in 73 games.
The Canadiens are currently riding a seven-game winning streak as they battle for a top-three spot in the Atlantic Division. Caufield's scoring prowess has been a major factor in their success. The last Canadiens player to score 50 goals in a season was Stephane Richer in 1990. No Canadiens player has ever won the Rocket Richard Trophy since its inception in 1999.
With the Canadiens making a playoff push and Caufield chasing individual milestones, the final stretch of the season promises excitement for Habs fans.
