Prime Minister Mark Carney is actively working to position Canada as a prime destination for global capital, hosting an unprecedented investment summit in Toronto. The event, which began Sunday evening and continues through September 15, has drawn approximately 300 CEOs and senior executives from major international investment firms. These investors collectively manage over $120 trillion in assets, highlighting the significant capital pool Carney aims to tap into.
Carney emphasized Canada's inherent strengths, stating, "We have what the world wants: the energy, the resources, the talent, the technology and the capital." He specifically pointed to Canada's vast energy and critical mineral resources, a highly educated workforce, and advantageous trade agreements that grant Canadian businesses access to approximately 1.5 billion consumers globally. In a subtle contrast to U. S. trade policies, Carney also highlighted "trust" as Canada's greatest strength, a quality he stated cannot be found on any balance sheet.
The summit is a cornerstone of Carney's ambitious plan to catalyze $1 trillion in investments across Canada over the next five years. Projects ranging from railways and pipelines to port expansions and critical minerals are being pitched to investors. The event is co-organized with major Canadian asset managers like the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investments. Attendees include figures such as Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez and Canada's chief trade commissioner, Sara Wilshaw.
