The program, which commenced on August 10, 2026, is set to run for one year or until the allocated funds are exhausted. A single producer can receive a maximum rebate of $50 million. This move comes as a direct response to U. S. tariffs that have impacted Canadian steel and aluminum, with the government expressing a commitment to defend and promote the industry. The announcement was made in Hamilton, a city with significant steel production history.
