The Vancouver Canucks are parting ways with veteran defenceman Marcus Pettersson, who has been traded to the New York Rangers. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman confirmed the deal on Wednesday, reporting that the Canucks will receive a 2030 first-round pick in exchange for Pettersson. The pick is top-10 protected, adding a layer of security for the Canucks' return.
Pettersson, 30, had been with the Canucks for roughly a season and a half after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins. He previously played for the Anaheim Ducks before his time in Vancouver. During the past season, Pettersson played in all 82 games for the Canucks, registering three goals and 18 points, while averaging over 21 minutes of ice time per game. His career totals include 21 goals and 180 points in 604 NHL games.
This move marks a notable transaction for both clubs. The Rangers, looking to bolster their defence corps, acquire a mobile player who has experience on both the Penguins and Canucks. The trade also creates an interesting full-circle narrative, as the first-round pick the Canucks originally acquired from the Rangers in the J. T. Miller deal was subsequently used by Vancouver to acquire Pettersson from Pittsburgh. The Canucks, now in a rebuilding phase, continue to retool their roster by collecting draft assets for the future.
