The Montreal Canadiens announced Wednesday that they have recalled goaltender Jacob Fowler from the AHL's Laval Rocket. The 21-year-old Fowler has had a strong season with the Rocket, posting a 19-7-1 record with three shutouts, a 2.23 goals-against average, and a.916 save percentage in 27 games.
Fowler also played 10 games with the Canadiens earlier this season, recording a 4-4-2 record with a.902 save percentage and a 2.62 goals-against average. He was sent back to Laval on January 15 after a loss to the Buffalo Sabres. The Canadiens drafted Fowler in the third round of the 2023 NHL entry draft.
The recall comes ahead of the Canadiens' game against the Ottawa Senators. Quebec native Samuel Montembeault has struggled in his recent starts, allowing nine goals in his last two games. This may open the door for Fowler to get more playing time and demonstrate his abilities at the NHL level. Canadiens coach Martin St-Louis has not yet announced which goalie will start against the Senators.
Fowler's performance in Laval suggests he is ready for another shot in Montreal. Habs fans will be watching closely to see if he can seize this opportunity and solidify his place in the Canadiens' net.
