Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné is set to undergo surgery after suffering a gruesome leg injury during Canada's recent World Cup match against Qatar. The injury occurred in the second half when Qatar's Assim Madibo tackled Koné from behind, sending the 24-year-old to the ground in visible pain. The impact was severe enough that teammates and coaches reported hearing a "bones snap."
Koné was immediately attended to by medical staff and stretchered off the field. Madibo was shown a red card for the tackle, which contributed to Qatar playing with nine men after an earlier expulsion. Despite the emotional toll the injury took on the team, Canada secured a significant 6-0 victory. Coach Jesse Marsch confirmed that Koné was taken to a local hospital and was preparing for surgery, with family by his side.
Canada captain Stephen Eustáquio expressed concern, stating, "I saw his leg. I saw that something wasn't right." He added that Koné's absence will be felt, noting his "X factor that our team really needs." Striker Jonathan David also commented on the nature of the tackle, questioning its necessity. Koné's replacement, Nathan Saliba, scored Canada's fourth goal and emotionally held up Koné's jersey in tribute. The severity of the injury means Koné is expected to miss the remainder of Canada's World Cup campaign.
