Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Canada Day that Canada will host the 2028 global summit of the Francophonie in the Ottawa area. This significant announcement underscores Canada's dedication to celebrating and promoting the French language both domestically and on the international stage.
The summit, a recurring event typically held every two years, brings together leaders from member states and governments to discuss critical issues such as the state of the French language, democracy, education, and environmental concerns. Canada's decision to host this major international gathering in the National Capital Region, encompassing Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec, highlights the country's bilingual identity and its active role in global affairs.
Canada has a long-standing history with La Francophonie, being one of its founding countries. The nation has previously hosted the summit in 1987 and 2008 in Quebec City, and in Moncton in 1999. This upcoming summit in 2028 is expected to foster new economic partnerships and deepen trade and cultural exchanges across a global network of Francophone nations. It will also serve as a platform to showcase Canada's diverse Francophone communities, including those in Quebec, Ontario, and the Maritimes.
Canada's bid to host the summit was the only one submitted, signaling a strong commitment from the nation to lead discussions on shared values and sustainable development within the Francophone world. The event is anticipated to attract global attention and provide a significant opportunity for Canada to strengthen its international relationships and reinforce its position as a key player in global governance and cultural exchange.
