Canada Imposes Dollar-for-Dollar Tariffs, Offers $7.5B Support

Ottawa has announced it will implement dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on approximately $27.6 billion worth of American goods, directly responding to recent U. S. tariffs on Canadian exports. This move, effective September 8, 2026, will see tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% applied to roughly 700 product lines, mirroring the rates imposed by the United States. The targeted sectors include steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, aiming to level the playing field for Canadian industries.

Alongside the retaliatory measures, the federal government is introducing a $7.5 billion support package designed to shield Canadian workers and businesses from the economic fallout. This package builds on nearly $25 billion in previously implemented supports. Key components include a $1.5 billion boost to the Regional Tariff Response Initiative, enhancements to Business Development Bank of Canada programs, and a new Canada Strong Diversification Fund.

The government stated that these actions are a necessary response to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses impacted by what it deems unjustified U. S. tariffs. This escalation marks a significant development in the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations, with both sides aiming to protect their domestic economies. The government emphasized its commitment to supporting Canadian industries through this period of volatility and to building a more resilient and diversified economy.
