Ottawa's new policy guaranteeing passport delivery within 30 days, or the application is free, has officially launched nationwide. The program, announced earlier this year, intends to address ongoing frustrations with passport processing times that have plagued Canadians, especially since the surge in travel following the pandemic.
The initiative applies to new passport applications, renewals, and child passports submitted either in person at a Service Canada office or by mail. The 30-day clock starts ticking once the application is officially received. If the passport arrives late, applicants are entitled to a full refund of their application fee. The federal government hopes this measure will incentivize improved efficiency and accountability within Passport Canada.
"We understand the importance of having a passport in a timely manner, whether it's for a business trip, a family vacation, or visiting loved ones," stated Karina Gould, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, in a press release. "This policy is about ensuring Canadians receive the service they deserve. We are committed to providing efficient and reliable passport services and holding ourselves accountable when we fall short."
While the program is welcomed by many, some critics question whether it will truly solve the underlying issues causing delays. Concerns remain about staffing levels, outdated technology, and the potential for increased demand during peak travel seasons. The government insists it is actively working to address these challenges and is confident the new policy will lead to a significant improvement in passport service delivery for all Canadians.
