Canada's men's Olympic hockey team started their quest for gold with a decisive 5-0 victory over the Czech Republic at the Milan Cortina Olympics. Nineteen-year-old Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring, marking his presence on the international stage. Jordan Binnington, who had been under scrutiny ahead of the tournament, delivered a stellar performance, stopping all 26 shots he faced to earn the shutout.

Mark Stone, Bo Horvat, Nathan MacKinnon, and Nick Suzuki also contributed goals to Canada's dominant performance. Connor McDavid showcased his playmaking skills with three assists, while Sidney Crosby and Thomas Harley each added two assists. The Canadian team, featuring 19 players from last year's 4 Nations Face-Off victory, displayed their experience and talent.

The game marked the return of NHL players to the Olympics after a 12-year absence, adding to the excitement. Canada's General Manager, Doug Armstrong, confirmed the players would be staying in NHLPA-provided hotel rooms, a decision made to ensure players' comfort and preparation. The move, while drawing some criticism, is consistent with past Olympic tournaments.

Despite facing boos from a largely Czech crowd, Canada asserted its dominance early, setting a strong tone for the tournament. The team will face Switzerland in their next Group A match.
