The Boston Bruins may be losing the rights to prospect Andre Gasseau, a seventh-round pick from the 2021 NHL Draft. Gasseau, a 22-year-old center, has completed a successful college career at Boston College, but recent reports suggest he's unlikely to sign with the Bruins.
Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal reported that Gasseau is seeking a contract that would allow him to play immediately. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet noted on his "32 Thoughts" podcast that Gasseau is not expected to sign with Boston, hinting that the Bruins aren't offering the immediate roster spot Gasseau desires. If he doesn't sign, the Bruins' rights to Gasseau will expire on August 15th, making him a free agent.
Gasseau's combination of size (6'4") and skill makes him an intriguing prospect. In 135 games with Boston College, he tallied 43 goals and 68 assists. Despite an injury-shortened season this year, he maintained a point-per-game pace with 6 goals and 17 assists in 23 games. His strong college performance and NHL-ready frame could generate interest from other teams if he becomes a free agent. Another team could also trade for his rights with the Bruins, although he wouldn't be eligible to play in the postseason this year if acquired by a playoff team.
The Bruins drafted Gasseau 213th overall in 2021. He was noted for his size and strength. Before joining Boston College, Gasseau played for the USHL's Fargo Force and USA Hockey's National Team Development Program.
