As the NHL trade deadline approaches, the Boston Bruins are reportedly considering trading forward prospect Matthew Poitras. According to reports, the Bruins are looking to add a top-six forward and a right-shot defenseman to help with their playoff push.
Poitras, a 21-year-old center, was drafted by the Bruins in the second round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He made the team in 2023, playing 33 games and recording 15 points. However, after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, his development has seemingly stalled. This season, he has spent the majority of his time with the Providence Bruins in the AHL, notching 9 goals and 21 assists in 47 games. He also played briefly with Boston, scoring one goal in three games.
Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney is reportedly willing to part with Poitras to acquire immediate help. Several teams might be interested in acquiring a young center with NHL experience, with the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs mentioned as potential destinations. The Bruins may be targeting players like Justin Faulk from St. Louis or exploring a reunion with Jake DeBrusk, who is currently with the Vancouver Canucks.
With the trade deadline looming on March 6th, it remains to be seen whether the Bruins will ultimately decide to move Poitras. The decision will likely depend on the return they can get and whether they can find a deal that improves their chances of competing for the Stanley Cup.
