Auston Matthews Out for Season After Gudas Hit

Share:

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is sidelined for the rest of the NHL season after a controversial hit during a game against the Anaheim Ducks. The incident occurred on March 12th, when Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas delivered a knee-on-knee hit to Matthews, causing him to leave the ice with assistance. The team later confirmed that Matthews suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion.

The severity of the injury and the nature of the hit have ignited a firestorm of criticism. Leafs general manager Brad Treliving reportedly expressed his fury, even calling players from the road after the game. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Treliving was "absolutely wild" about the incident and contacted some of the players involved to voice his displeasure. The lack of immediate response from Matthews' teammates on the ice also drew criticism.

Gudas received a five-game suspension for kneeing, the maximum allowable under the circumstances. However, Matthews' agent, Judd Moldaver, expressed his disappointment with the league's decision, calling the suspension inadequate. Coach Craig Berube also stated that the length of suspension wasn't enough. Matthews finished the season with 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games, also winning a gold medal with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for training camp in September.
