Asteroid 2024 YR4: Earth Safe, Moon at Slight Risk in 2032

Asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered in late 2024, briefly caused concern when initial calculations suggested a small chance of impacting Earth in 2032. The asteroid, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters in diameter, was closely monitored by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). Subsequent observations have significantly lowered the risk to Earth, essentially ruling out any impact for the foreseeable future.

While Earth is safe, a new analysis indicates a roughly 4% chance that asteroid 2024 YR4 could collide with the Moon on December 22, 2032. While seemingly distant, this potential impact is generating excitement among scientists. A lunar strike would be the most energetic impact event witnessed in human history, releasing energy equivalent to a medium-sized thermonuclear weapon.

Such an event could provide invaluable data for physicists and planetary scientists. A collision would vaporize rock and plasma and be visible from the Pacific region. Even days after the impact, the James Webb Space Telescope could gather data on the cooling process and crater formation. The resulting crater could be approximately 1 km wide and 150-260 m deep.

Canadian astronomers are also closely following these developments. According to a space scientist at Athabasca University, asteroid impacts are inevitable, making continued monitoring and research crucial. While a lunar impact wouldn't directly affect Canada, the scientific insights gained would benefit the global understanding of our solar system.
