Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has underscored the vital role of women in driving shared economic growth between Canada and African nations. During a recent visit to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Anand highlighted Canada's focus on strengthening ties with African countries through increased airline connections, trade, and security projects, with a particular emphasis on boosting the economic participation of women on the continent.
"There is a definite aspect to supporting the strength of women in the workforces here," Anand stated in an interview. She noted that her entire team accompanying her on the trip consisted of women, reflecting Canada's commitment to gender equality in its diplomatic and economic outreach.
Canada's development finance institution, FinDev, announced a significant loan of approximately $65 million to an Ivorian bank, with a commitment that 30 percent of the funds will be directed towards women-owned small businesses. Additionally, Anand announced $17 million in funding for various projects aimed at increasing women's participation in the energy sector in Ivory Coast. This aligns with Canada's broader Africa Strategy, which seeks to couple foreign aid with economic partnerships to foster mutual prosperity.
The minister's visit also included the opening of Canada's new embassy in Cotonou, Benin, marking the first visit by a Canadian foreign minister to that country. This move signifies Canada's growing importance in West Africa and its dedication to strengthening bilateral relationships through economic cooperation, security initiatives, and a shared commitment to gender equality.
