Alfredsson faces Senators with Leafs, calls return 'emotional'

Daniel Alfredsson, a cherished figure in Ottawa Senators history, is experiencing a wave of emotions as he prepares to coach against his former team for the first time. Having joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach this past July, Alfredsson's transition marks a significant shift in the storied Battle of Ontario rivalry.

Alfredsson, who spent 17 seasons with the Senators and had his number 11 retired by the franchise, admitted that the move was not an easy one. He expressed initial uncertainty about whether he could make the transition to coaching with a rival team, but ultimately decided it was an opportunity to evolve and grow as a coach. He has embraced the move, stating, "If I want to be a coach, you've got to experience different situations and different scenarios."

The Hall of Famer has already made amends with some of his past rivals, joking that he and former Maple Leafs agitator Darcy Tucker have "kissed and made up" after an encounter at a Leafs alumni golf tournament. While Alfredsson maintains positive relationships with many in the Senators organization, he acknowledges the unique feeling of being on the opposite bench. He looks forward to the upcoming game, understanding that while it will be emotional, it's a new chapter in his career. He will also return to Ottawa on Jan. 20, where he will see his retired number hanging in the rafters of the Canadian Tire Centre.
