Alberta to Hold Referendum on Separation Referendum this Fall

Share:

Alberta is set to hold a referendum this fall asking voters whether the province should conduct a binding referendum on separating from Canada. Premier Danielle Smith announced the decision, stating it aims to address the varying sentiments of Albertans regarding separation while adhering to a recent court ruling. The vote is scheduled for October 19.

The referendum question will ask: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”. Smith emphasized that a "yes" vote would allow the government to take legal steps towards a second separation vote without conflicting with the court ruling.

This decision follows a court ruling that struck down a previous separatist petition due to a failure to consult with First Nations. Smith has expressed her support for Alberta remaining in Canada but also voiced concerns about the court's interference with democratic rights. She stated the new question is designed to respect both the pro-federalist "Forever Canadian" petition and the "Stay Free Alberta" separation petition.

Nate Glubish, the technology and innovation minister, affirmed his commitment to keeping Canada united. He stated that he would vote to stay in Canada if the referendum proceeds. The upcoming vote highlights the ongoing debate within Alberta regarding its relationship with the rest of Canada.
